A Quick Update on EWM in Pelican Lake and the Cost of Handpulling 7-18-21
Each spring Onterra surveys our lake for Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM), at a cost of between $2,000-$3,000. This year they found a small patch of EWM in both Treacherous Bay and Outlet Bay, and the Aquatic Plant Management team hand-pulled it over the course of two days. At a cost of $1,800 per day, hand-pulling thus far has cost us $3,600. Below is a photo of the amount they took out of Outlet Bay: 43 cubic feet of Milfoil.
During their survey, Onterra also found a big increase of EWM in Musky Bay. Because we’ll need more days of hand-pulling to put a dent in the EWM population there, we’ve now arranged for the team to return for 5 extra days of hand-pulling before the end of this season.
In an attempt to keep EWM at bay, our total expenditures for this year (for the survey and for hand-pulling) may be in the $15,000-$16,000 range. Although we will never totally eliminate this plant from our lake, we can try to keep it from taking over like it has in other lakes.
